  1. DOUXO® S3 has a new active ingredient called Ophytrium.
  2. This replaces phytosphingosine. Ophytrium is a natural ingredient extracted from the root of the Japanese mondo grass plant (Ophiopogon japonicus). It is scientifically proven to help maintain the mechanical skin barrier, the microbial skin flora, and reduce irritation1, 2, 3.

Lucifer yellow (LY) is a fluorescent dye used in cell biology. In our study, it was used to highlight skin permeability. In healthy skin, the dye is retained in the stratum corneum. An increased penetration of LY to the first layer of the stratum granulosum was seen when the skin was stressed. The addition of Ophytrium inhibited the penetration of LY, showing that Ophytrium has restorative effects on the skin barrier, making it less permeable. Trans epidermal water loss was also found to be reduced when Ophytrium was present1, 2.

In stressed skin models (mimicking irritated skin in vitro),  IL-8 and TSLP,  were increased compared to normal skin. When Ophytrium was added to stressed skin models, this was shown to have a beneficial effect 1, 2.
